A
Hmong migrant suspected in the killings
of six hunters told investigators he began firing after he
was shot at first and some of the victims called him racially derogatory
names. Chai Vang, a Hmong immigrant from Laos, was arrested Sunday
about four hours after the shootings as he emerged from the woods with
his empty SKS 7.62 mm semiautomatic rifle. The dead were identified as
the landowner, Robert Crotteau,

Laski, 43; Mark Roidt,
28; Jessica Willers, 27;
and Denny Drew, 55, who died
Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Willers' father, Terry
Willers, remained hospitalized Tuesday in fair condition. Some
Hmong leaders had questioned whether racial differences may have
figured in the shootings.Minneapolis police said they arrested Vang on
Christmas Eve 2001 after he waved a gun and threatened to kill his wife.-

Foreign-Born Population Tops 34M
More than 34 million U.S. residents were born outside the United States,
with arrivals from Mexico driving much of the growth in the foreign-born
population since 2000, a private research group says. The foreign-born
population grew at a clip of over 1 million a year between 2000 and
2004, even though the U.S. economy was suffering, according to the
analysis being released Tuesday by the Center
for Immigration Studies, which favors stricter immigration
policies.

Charge 26 With Operating Asylum Ring
A fraud ring operating in northern Virginia helped more than 1,000
Indonesian immigrants file bogus asylum applications in recent
years, federal prosecutors said Monday. Applicants were coached to
tell authorities they had been beaten or raped by Muslims in Indonesia
because they were ethnic Chinese or Christians. Their applications
contained bogus accounts of abuse that were identical on multiple
applications. The ringleader, prosecutors say, was Hans Gouw,
53, of Fairfax Station, an Indonesian citizen who was himself
granted asylum in 1999. Of the 26 facing charges, 23 were Indonesian,
two were U.S. citizens and one is believed to be an Australian of
Indonesian descent. Fifteen of the 23 Indonesians were granted asylum.

New Jersey priest was sentenced Tuesday morning for having sex with
a 9-year-old Milwaukee boy
in 1990. The Rev. Simon Palathingal, 62, came face to face
in court with his victim, 23-year-old Nick
Janovsky. But the fact that he's eligible for parole after
the first four years is not sitting well with the victim. The judge
sentenced Palathingal to 16 years in prison."It's disappointing
to see. You can't take these years away from my life, and it is very
disappointing to see a man who does these horrific things detailed
in the criminal complaint get off with a slap on the wrist,"
Janovsky said. - (Gman) The
priest has family in India and was ordered to surrender his passport.
Palathingal is a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco religious order.
