Assaults on Arizona Border Agents Increase PHOENIX -- U.S. Border Patrol agents working the Arizona-Mexico border were victims of twice as many attacks this past fiscal year compared with the previous year, officials say. The Border Patrol's Yuma and Tucson sectors recorded 365 assaults on agents between Oct. 1, 2004, and Sept. 30, 2005, up from 179 attacks reported for the same time period the year before, officials told The Arizona Republic. Nationwide, agents were assaulted 687 times, up from 349 a year earlier. Officials say the growing number of attacks reflects the increased influence of criminal gangs and the profits they can make smuggling migrants across the border. Agents' vehicles are protected against rocks, the most common threat, and the Yuma sector has the first vehicle deployed along the border that can withstand gunfire. There were 45 shooting incidents recorded during the last fiscal year along the Arizona border, up from 15 the previous year. |

GOP mulls ending birthright citizenship and putting a wall across the Mexican 'border' House Republicans are looking closely at ending birthright citizenship and building a barrier along the entire U.S.-Mexico border as they search for solutions to illegal immigration. A task force of party leaders and members active on immigration has met since the summer to try to figure out where consensus exists, and several participants said those two ideas have floated to the top of the list of possibilities to be included either in an immigration-enforcement bill later this year or in a later comprehensive immigration overhaul. "There is a general agreement about the fact that citizenship in this country should not be bestowed on people who are the children of folks who come into this country illegally," said Rep. Tom Tancredo, Colorado Republican, who is participating in the "unity dinners," the group of Republicans trying to find consensus on immigration. - (Invasion!) |

Conviction of Colombian migrant in 2001 rape of jogger upheld Milton Romero-Camacho is serving 26 years to life after being found guilty in 2003 of two counts of second-degree kidnapping and three counts of sexual assault. She was threatened with a knife, had tape put over her mouth and was raped on a baby blanket her attacker had placed behind some bushes. Romero-Camacho, who was born in Cali, Colombia, and is not a U.S. citizen, could be deported after serving his sentence. |

The governor's remarks were made on a radio show Thursday, called for putting up a "nonfatal fence that had monitors on it." Rapist Migrant from the Bahamas Makes Victim Write Him A Check - Caught After Trying To Cash Check Fla. -- Davie police said a rape suspect assaulted his victim, then made her write a check made out to him. Anthony Roberts followed a woman home from work Tuesday night. "As she's unlocking the door, he pulls out a gun, puts it to the back of her head and forces her into his apartment. Once inside the apartment, he asks her if she has any cash, credit cards or an ATM card," the woman had no cash, so Roberts said he would take a check made out in his name, police said. "He demands that she write a check. She writes him a check for $1,400 in his own name. He then binds her with duct tape, brings her into a bedroom, and at some point he decides he's going to sexually batter this woman." Roberts fled the apartment complex and the woman called 911. - (Rasp) Roberts, who is from the Bahamas, remained in jail Thursday.
