Black suspect released days before allegedly executing White woman NEW ORLEANS -- Brandy Keenan was a troubled young woman. Battling drug addiction, the 38-year-old mother of five had been arrested several times because of her habit. Her spontaneous trips to New Orleans were usually greeted with anxiety by the rest of her family back in Bogalusa. Last September, Keenan’s grandmother Dorothy Courtois begged her not to go. “We often worried about it,” Courtois said. “That she might get hurt down there, get put back in jail or something like that. But we never thought that she'd be murdered.” Tragically, that’s exactly what happened. What Keenan couldn't have known was that she would run into a man with criminal troubles far greater than her own. According to police, the trouble came from 29-year-old Briceson Carter. On Oct. 12, he allegedly bound Brandy Keenan by the hands and feet, shot her execution-style, and left her body in a weed-choked abandoned lot. All within a few square miles. Brandy's father Wayne Jenkins said he can barely cope. - (Black-on-white) |

Black Sudanese immigrant to return to court in 2005 slaying of White American woman - his semen found in her house When Garang Deng pleaded guilty to murder more than four years ago, it seemed like the final act of a tale that stretched from war-torn Sudan to a peaceful Kane County bike path. After breaking into the home of Marilyn Bethell of Aurora in October 2005, Deng took her to the Illinois Prairie Path and shot her once in the head, Kane County prosecutors said. Almost immediately after his guilty plea in 2009, Deng regretted it and began the legal process to withdraw the plea. An appeals court ruled in his favor in June. Deng is scheduled to return to Kane County on Tuesday in his first court appearance in legal proceedings that eventually could lead to a new trial. "We're preparing as if we're going to trial," State's Attorney Joe McMahon said. Deng, who was 14 at the time of the slaying, was a Sudanese refugee whose family had left the African nation when he was a young boy to seek a more peaceful life. But Deng accumulated a history of juvenile offenses in DuPage County beginning at age 11, authorities said. Deng allegedly broke into Bethell's house sometime around Oct. 31, 2005. Her car was involved in a crash that day, and someone matching Deng's denoscription was seen running from the vehicle, police said. Bethell's body wasn't found until Dec. 26. - (Black-on-white) |

Killer's family to victim's kin: 'We hate you' - Milwaukee black-on-white murder casts long shadows It appears crimes have long shadows, at least several years in some cases. Seandell Jackson killed Nathan Potter in Milwaukee in 2009. Jackson was a convicted felon who had shot someone a few hours before he shot Potter. For the same reason: Of course it was a robbery, but he told the judge he thought he was “having fun.” Potter was college student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. By all accounts a gentle soul. A free spirit. A few hours before Potter’s execution, at least one person dialed 911 to report a couple of sketchy characters lurking around the neighborhood. There had been a robbery there the night before. It was Jackson and his friend. Police never showed. Jackson and his friend were hunting for victims when they saw Potter leave a bar. They stalked him, accosted him, demanded money and killed him. During the questioning, the killer repeatedly referred to his victim as the “little white boy.” - (Black-on-white) |

Black Mob Violence in Macon: What’s Snow Got to Do with It? John J. Owens is absolutely sure race had nothing to do with the reason why 30 black people attacked five white people, including a mom and a baby, near Macon Georgia last week. The alleged assailants and victims could have been any race. “Color doesn’t matter, only the ‘idiot factor’ matters,” opined Mr. Owens in the Macon Telegraph. That means the rest is random. Anyone who ever took — and passed — a course in elementary statistics might wander about why Mr. Owens is so willing to dismiss race as a factor in the violence. Because the odds of 30 black people “randomly” attacking five white people — including the woman and child — are about the same as the odds of fully loaded jet liner crashing on your front lawn. Twice. On the same day. With your mom in the first plane. And your long lost brother in the second. - (Black-on-white) |

Arrest made in Whtie Shrewsbury woman's 1974 stabbing death by black man SHREWSBURY, Mass. —An arrest has been made in the murder of a Shrewsbury woman whose husband found her stabbed to death in their home 40 years ago. Eileen B. Ferro was 21 when she was killed in her home on Ladyslipper Drive on Feb. 22, 1974. Her husband, Anthony T. Ferro Jr., found her body. Lonzo Guthrie, 69, was arrested Tuesday night and arraigned on a fugitive of justice charge in Georgia in connection with the case. Investigators said at the time that the slaying was especially brutal. Ferro, a dental hygienist who grew up in Worcester, had been slashed numerous times in the head and shoulders with a heavy, sharp object, possibly a hatchet or a butcher knife, police said. In 1974, police quickly ruled out robbery as a motive for the slaying and said Ferro didn't appear to have been sexually assaulted. Police initially theorized she knew her killer, based on the lack of any signs of forced entry or a struggle in the house. - (Black-on-white) |

Nigeria 'scammer' Orowo Jesse Omokoh held over death of Australian Jette Jacobs NIGERIAN police have arrested a 28-year-old man wanted in connection with the death of an Australian woman and for defrauding her of $90,000 in an online dating scam. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) told AFP that Orowo Jesse Omokoh was arrested on January 28 in Nigeria, without stating where exactly. The graduate, who attended the University of Ibadan, in the southwest of the country, will be brought before court for extradition proceedings, a spokesman said. Omokoh is alleged to have struck up a fake online romance with Jette Jacobs, but five days after he moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, to meet her in February last year, she was found dead. Some of her valuables were missing and Omokoh had returned to Nigeria. "The South African police, which is investigating the mysterious death, are suspicious that Omokoh has a hand in the demise of Jacobs," the EFCC said. The organisation, which investigates money-laundering and online scams, said Australian Federal Police informed officers in March that Omokoh had allegedly defrauded Jacobs of $90,000. Jacobs, a grandmother from Western Australia, reportedly sent tens of thousands of dollars to Nigeria during her four-year "romance" with a man known as "Jesse", according to Australian media. - (Black-on-white) |
