 Nasir Abdi was considered dangerous because he had stopped taking his psychiatric medication, so Franklin County deputy sheriffs were called to take him back to treatment. But their efforts ended tragically yesterday after Abdi refused to go and lunged at the deputies with a knife. Mace didn’t stop him, and when he lunged again, one of the deputies shot him. The 23-year-old Somali immigrant was declared dead at 1:31 p.m. "A knife is one of the most deadly weapons we come up against," said a Columbus police spokesman. The Minneapolis-St. Paul area dealt with a similar issue in 2002, when six Minneapolis police officers fatally shot a machete-wielding Somali man who was mentally ill. Abdi emigrated from Somalia to the United States in 1999 with his family, living first in Tennessee, then moving to Columbus in 2000. About a year later, Abdi started showing signs of mental illness, said his brother Liban Abdi, 21.

Idaho women who may have been infected by HIV-positive Zambian migrant get tested * Three more women have come forward
 MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) -- Several women believed to have had sex with a man who they say didn't tell them he had the HIV virus, a felony in Idaho, are undergoing testing this week in a Moscow clinic. So far, about a dozen people linked to the case have been tested for HIV, said Carol Moehrle, director of the North Central District Health Department. She declined to give the results, citing medical privacy laws. Kanay A. Mubita, 31, has been charged in 2nd District Court with seven counts of transferring body fluids that may contain HIV to seven separate women. HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus that can lead to fatal AIDS. - Bitter Debate Over 'Bithright Citizenship' for Illegal Migrant 'Anchor Babies"
A proposal to change long-standing federal policy and deny citizenship to babies born to illegal immigrants on U.S. soil ran aground this month in Congress, but it is sure to resurface kindling bitter debate even if it fails to become law. At issue is "birthright citizenship" provided for since the Constitution's 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868. Section 1 of that amendment, drafted with freed slaves in mind, says: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States."
It was never intended to grant citizenship automatically to babies of illegal immigrants. Thus they contend that federal legislation, rather than a difficult-to-achieve constitutional amendment, would be sufficient to end birthright citizenship. With more than 70 co-sponsors, Georgia Republican Rep. Nathan Deal tried to include a revocation of birthright citizenship in an immigration bill passed by the House in mid-December. GOP House leaders did not let the proposal come to a vote.

Honduran Serial Rape Suspect Reynaldo E. Rapalo Had Help Escaping, Police Say
 MIAMI -- An accused serial rapist who escaped from jail by climbing through a ceiling vent and rappelling down the building using tied-together bed sheets appears to have had help, the city's police chief said Thursday. Reynaldo E. Rapalo is accused of sexually assaulting seven girls and women in the Little Havana neighborhood in 2002 and 2003. He escaped Tuesday night from the jail where he was awaiting a February trial that could have sent him to prison for life. Merhani Teklemariam Bahabla - who is black and a native of Eritrea gets 112 years to life in prison for four rapes in Santa Rosa
Speaking during an emotional hearing, two of the victims said Merhani Bahabla shattered their lives, while he said the jury convicted him because they "judged me by my color." In a wide-ranging statement, Bahabla, who is black and a native of Eritrea, said he wouldn't have committed the rapes because his mother had taught him to respect women. "I am not the first innocent person to go to the jail," he said, "so thank you, God bless you and Merry Christmas." He was convicted in November of 12 sex offenses, committed between October 2003 and January 2004, including forcible rape and forcible sodomy. He wielded a knife against three victims, authorities said. Idaho Suit Over Illegal Immigration Tossed
 BOISE, Idaho -- A federal judge on Wednesday tossed out a southwest Idaho county's lawsuit against local employers accused of hiring illegal immigrants -- an attempt to recoup money the county says it has spent on the workers. In dismissing the case, U.S. District Judge Edward Lodge said the county's contention that the hiring of illegal aliens posed a "public nuisance" was not grounded in state law. The county filed the lawsuit in July against four businesses: Syngenta Seeds, Sorrento Lactalis, Swift Beef and Harris Moran Seed, as well as against the former director of the nonprofit Idaho Migrant Council.
